Project Overview:

Background:

This scheme was commissioned when Flintshire County Council identified 250 hard-to-treat properties that would benefit from improvements to their insulation and heating systems. Since cavity wall insulation and other conventional technologies would be inappropriate, they required a solution based on external wall insulation (EWI). The necessary work would be procured via the Fusion 21 Procurement for Housing framework.

The Brief:

The brief related to a mix of properties, including both social housing and privately owned homes. Designers therefore had to liaise effectively with local homeowners in order to ensure that they understood the benefits and were happy with the designs. Resident support was essential for ensuring sufficient take-up of the offer and for the timely delivery of the scheme.

Design & Specification:

The external wall insulation system chosen for the scheme comprised the PermaRock EPS-Premium External Wall Insulation, covered with PermaRock SiliconeUltra Finishes.

PermaRock EPS-Premium external wall insulation systems are high-performance, lightweight systems based on expanded polystyrene (EPS) insulating panels. They incorporate microscopic particles of graphite (Grey EPS) for enhanced thermal performance and to dissipate heat. They may be used to insulate both new-build or existing buildings, and can assist in achieving Code for Sustainable Homes Levels 4 - 6 and Passivhaus Standards.

PermaRock SiliconeUltra K Finish is a textured render that combines nano-quartz particles and silicone emulsion. It is durable and highly weather resistant, and has self-cleansing properties; photo-catalytic particles help to break down and shed dirt particles, which can be washed from the surface under normal weathering. This helps to render to retain a bright and attractive appearance. This is enhanced by a preservative that also protects against unsightly growths of algae and fungus.

Results:

The target of 250 properties was achieved on schedule, with all the necessary works completing within just nine months. The individual properties exhibited significantly improved energy efficiency and it has been estimated that annual energy savings now amount to between £400 and £500 per household.
