Project Overview

Background

In July 2024, construction work began on a £27 million expansion programme at Rushcliffe Spencer Academy in West Bridgford. The scheme was managed by Morgan Sindall on behalf of Nottinghamshire County Council. Its purpose was to increase the school’s student capacity by a total of 560 places, comprising 450 for secondary pupils and a further 110 in the sixth form.

Like others in the same part of Nottinghamshire, the school had been over-subscribed for several years. Moreover, local planners recognised that as its catchment encompassed more and more housing developments, the shortfall in provision would only increase. Consequently, the school devised a masterplan – dubbed Project 2310 – to boost the number of places from 1,770 in 2024 to 2,310 by the start of the 2031/32 academic year.

The works would include the phased demolition of a former leisure centre on the school site, together with refurbishment works and, elsewhere, the construction of new educational buildings with a total floor area of 5,150m². These would include a four-storey teaching block, together with new dining facilities, a kitchen and a sports hall.

Brief:

In November 2023, Rushcliffe Spencer Academy had been named as one of four winners of the Eco-School of the Year Award, which recognised its commitment to sustainability and raising awareness of environmental issues. Consequently, and very fittingly, the design of the new building included many important resource-efficiency features.

The main teaching block would be composed of a lightweight steel frame, covered with Siniat Weather Defence boarding. This would provide the substrate for an external wall insulation system comprising non-combustible mineral fibre insulation boards and an attractive weather-protective finish. In accordance with the DfE Schools Output Specification, this system would need to demonstrate a design life of at least 40 years and must achieve an A2-s1,d0 reaction to fire classification (EN 13501-1).

Low energy lighting systems also played an important part in the design, as did the use of modern doors and glazing systems that optimised the use of natural daylight and helped to prevent the transmission of heat.

Although intelligent scheduling sought to make good use of the school holiday periods, much of the installation work would take place while pupils were studying on site in nearby buildings. It was therefore incumbent on suppliers and all stakeholder partners to coordinate their efforts to minimise disruption and to ensure swift and safe completion.

Design and Specification:

When combined with Permarock SiliconeUltra K finish, Permarock Mineral Fibre EWI systems achieve an A2-s1,d0 reaction to fire classification and can be used on buildings of any height. The Schools Output Specification Technical Annex 2C: External Fabric dictates that “cladding on a school building with a storey 18m above ground level shall achieve Class A2-s1, d0 fire resistance or better.”  Similarly, it states that the same rating is required “where school buildings are prone to vandalism… for all special schools,” and for all residential areas of boarding schools.

The Permarock Mineral Fibre Insulation was supplied in boards measuring 1200 mm x 600 mm. Generally, they were installed to a thickness of 170 mm but other thicknesses were used as necessary to complete the detailed design. All insulation boards were affixed using a polymer-modified, cement-based adhesive and mechanical fixings.

Permarock SiliconeUltra K Finish is a flexible, vapour-permeable render with an attractive textured finish. It provides durable weather protection and helps to maintain airtight facades that, in turn, help to ensure a thermally efficient building envelope.

With a hybrid binder system of organically crosslinked nano-quartz particles and silicone emulsion, it helps resists the accumulation of dirt. It also contains a preservative that inhibits the growth of algae and other organisms. Together, these technologies help to produce a finish that retains a clean, bright appearance for longer than conventional silicone, acrylic or mineral renders. It therefore minimises the need for regular cleaning and costly maintenance.

Performance and Sustainability:

Permarock Mineral Fibre insulation is manufactured to EN 13162 and is CFC and HCFC free. It has zero Ozone Depletion Potential and zero Global Warming Potential.

Permarock Mineral Fibre External Wall Insulation systems have low embodied energy and are BIM Level 2 compliant. They exhibit thermal conductivity of 0.036 W/mK, and have an Ecopoints score of 0.10 (m2). This is classified as an ‘excellent’ rating. When used as part of a suitably designed low-carbon project, they enable very low U-values to be achieved.

Planning and Project Delivery:

Permarock technical staff were actively engaged in the design stages, providing specification advice, material and colour samples, BIM Object files and thermal calculations. By providing further support with system detailing, they also contributed to an efficient plan for mobilisation and installation. Later, as the scheme advanced, technicians carried out pull-out tests, ongoing quality inspections, on-site and remote technical assistance as required.

The installed EWI system was fitted by Rendserve, a Permarock Registered Installer with a long track record of using Permarock systems on successful new-build and retrofit projects. Its team successfully completed the work on schedule, presenting no obstacles to other stakeholders’ progress.

Result:

All works were completed in November 2024 and the building quickly became operational. Staff and pupils were able to move into the new block with minimal disruption, following the official opening and a site tour by local officials.

Speaking to local newspapers at the opening, West Bridgford South Councillor Jonathan Wheeler said: “I am delighted to have worked alongside the Spencer Academy Trust and other partners over many years to get to this point. The hundreds of extra places will allow more local children to attend this great school, which I know from speaking to many parents is a key reason for living in the area.”

Councillor Nigel Moxon, Deputy Cabinet Member for Education and SEND, said: “I visited this building last year when it was an empty shell and very much a building site. I was delighted to return now the works are completed and see the fantastic facilities available.”
