Project Overview

Background

In 2025, the specialist installer K&E Peck Limited was appointed by the owners of Beeston Dental Practice in Nottingham to refurbish the external walls of its clinic. The existing render on the masonry walls had begun to show its age and the client saw that replacing it would also afford an opportunity to improve the building’s overall energy efficiency.

Brief:

The project called for the old render to be removed and replaced with a new external wall insulation system. This would help to improve the thermal performance of the building as a whole, while also refreshing its appearance and offering enhanced protection against the weather.

Design and Specification:

Permarock’s technical team worked with the project design team to agree the following specification for the EWI system:

The Permarock EPS insulation was supplied in boards measuring 1200 mm x 600 mm. Generally, they were installed to a thickness of 40 mm but other thicknesses were used as necessary to complete the detailed design. The low-lambda boards incorporate microscopic graphite particles, which greatly improve their ability to reflect and absorb radiant heat.

Permarock SiliconeUltra K Finish is a flexible, vapour-permeable render that is attractive, durable and capable of producing an effective barrier against the weather. It also helps to maintain airtight facades, which helps to improve a building’s capacity to retain heat in cold conditions.  It has a textured finish that resists the accumulation of dirt and organic growth. Consequently, it reduces the need for costly cleaning and maintenance work.

Performance and Sustainability

Permarock EPS Premium insulation is manufactured to EN 13162 and is CFC- and HCFC-free. It has zero Ozone Depletion Potential and low Global Warming Potential.

The Permarock EPS Premium system exhibits thermal conductivity of 0.030 W/mK and can assist in achieving Passivhaus Standards and Code for Sustainable Homes Levels 4 to 6.

Planning and Project Delivery

Permarock technical staff supported the installer at an early design stage. They provided project visualisations, material samples and colour samples to show to the client, together with BIM Object files and thermal calculations. They also performed pull-out tests to determine the integrity of the existing substrate, and how best to affix the EWI system to it.

As work progressed, the same technicians conducted on-site quality inspections and technical assistance as required.

Result:

Permarock’s design team produced the requisite specification in July 2025. The installation work was completed on time in November 2025.
